We had perfect weather for our autumn ascent of Mount Magazine: 75 degrees, sunny, and clear. The Arkansas River was spilling over its banks from heavy rains the week before, but up in the Oachita Mountains it was fall colors and clear views.

We set out for the summit (Signal Hill) after enjoying the views and southern cooking at the beautiful Lodge at Mount Magazine. We parked in the empty lot at the hang gliding launch site and crossed to the summit trail. The trees near the top had lost their leaves for the winter, allowing the sun to shine through.

When we got back to the car, we found the formerly empty parking lot filled with cars and several hang gliders preparing to launch. We returned to the Lodge to spend a few hours reading and lounging in the sun on the back patio.
