We drove to the top of Mount Greylock during our very pleasant visit to Williamstown in the northwest corner of Massachusetts. We spent a few hours at the Sterling and Francise Clark Art Institute, a small but surprisingly excellent art museum based around a private collection. Evelyn and I are fans of private collections — there's a personal touch to the selections and the museum is a manageable size. We spent another few hours at a local bookstore, where Evelyn bought a nut cookbook that she still uses today.

We stayed at a motel on a quiet road in the woods outside of town. We may have been the only guests. We sat in the cozy living room watching and listening to the big thunderstorm that came through overnight.

We drove up Mount Greylock the next morning. We parked near the summit in a thick fog. We walked around blindly until the war memorial summit tower loomed menacingly above us. Needless to say we did not see the view.

I thought they said we could see 5 states from here!
