Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina

Sassafras Mountain was the most disappointing state highpoint that we have visited. While it is located in a beautiful woodland area, the highpoint itself is poorly marked (with a plastic stick like the ones used to label where utility lines run underground) and situated in a clearing that looks rather like a deserted parking lot. When we were there, a surveying crew had several tents pitched nearby, obscuring the "summit" even further. We walked past the spot two or three times before we finally found the USGS marker.

Well, at least the drive over from Georgia was scenic.
