Mount Mansfield, Vermont 4,393 feet |
Climbed 9/21/1992 |
Mount Mansfield was the first state highpoint that we climbed explicitly in service of our newborn goal of visiting all fifty.
We were in Vermont on a canoe trip. One evening I was looking at the map when I noticed that our next stop, Williamstown Massachusetts, was right next to the highest point in Massachusetts. Earlier in the trip we had climbed Mt Katahdin in Maine and drove to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Next I checked for the highest point in Vermont and found that it was not too far away. I mentioned it to Evelyn, and she was receptive to the idea of stopping at Mount Mansfield. In fact, she said, maybe we could go to the highpoint in every state! An idea is born.
As it turns out, the hike up Mount Mansfield is not difficult. It is at the top of a ski area, which means we could take a ski lift to within a mile of the top. It was overcast the day we visited, but we could see some fall color beyond the scars of the ski slopes.
